Escape Classics: 8 Flash Games to Break Out Of

Solve puzzles, combine items, crack codes – and finally the door swings open. Escape games were among the most popular Flash games of all time, and many of them are playable again here. They run right in your browser via the Ruffle emulator, with no Flash plugin required. Here are eight classics to get you started.

The list

1. Don't Escape – the other way round

Everything is flipped here: your job is not to escape. You're a werewolf, and you have to lock yourself into a cabin so securely that you can't hurt anyone once night falls. One of the most original ideas the genre ever had. Play Don't Escape

2. Trapped – a 2006 classic

A young man is stuck in a locked room. Examine everything, collect items and work out how to get him out. Made by Godlimations and released on Armor Games in 2006, it's point-and-click escape in its purest form. Play Trapped

3. Lost Memory – waking up in the dark

You wake up in a room you don't recognise. The door is locked and the lights are off. The game itself gives you the best advice: click everywhere and think outside the box. Play Lost Memory

4. Monster Basement 2 – not for the faint-hearted

Darkness, a flickering light and the memory of your friend's scream: Monster Basement 2 leans harder into creepy atmosphere than anything else on this list. Play Monster Basement 2

5. Crack the Safe – one safe after another

You have to crack a safe ten times to get the diamonds that open the doors. Perfect if you prefer number puzzles to hunting for hidden objects. Play Crack the Safe

6. Must Escape the Island – stranded

This time your prison isn't a room but a deserted island. Hunt for useful items and clues to get off it. Play Must Escape the Island

7. Friends Room Escape – new in the archive

We've only just brought this Gamesperk classic back: you're locked in a friend's room and need items and puzzles to find your way out. Play Friends Room Escape

8. Messed Up Room Escape – chaos in the bedroom

Also freshly restored: a boy hides in his messy room for fun, and his mum locks the door without noticing. Help him get out – a 123Bee game played entirely with the mouse. Play Messed Up Room Escape

How to get out faster

01

Click everything

Escape games love hiding clues in corners, under rugs or behind pictures. Work through every area systematically before you give up.

02

Combine your items

Many puzzles only click once you put two items together. Try the odd combinations too.

03

Take notes

Numbers, colours and symbols often turn up again somewhere completely different. A scrap of paper next to your keyboard saves a lot of clicking around.

04

Take a break

When you're completely stuck, step away for a minute. With fresh eyes, the detail you missed usually jumps right out.
